That along with two nework cards built in or set in on PCI slots and you can have a fantastic firewall to protect your home network. Add additonal cards/interfaces if you want to seperate wireless or a webserver.

However, the best thing I have found as a result of switching from a linksys router is the page load speed. Currently using a 1.7 Celeron of the p4 days with 512mb of ram and it rarely uses 6% cpu and 2% memory so as the specs go you can use a really old computer with better results than many of the "box" solutions available today.

Check out m0n0wall for a bootable linux based firewall solution, I like it.

I run a pfsense (monowall with openvpn support) on an ALIX at home...

BTW: 1.7GHz is really overkill.. You don't need but a 100mhz machine to run monowall. And a Pentium 4 is a waste of your power bill.

Any thoughts on what to do with all this old school SCSI stuff I've still got hanging around? Man, that stuff rocked...

Even with third party firmware in the linksys as the linksys firmware is linux based? DD-WRT? Just curious.

Running dd=wrt on another linksys box I have, it connects blueray player, x-box to hp wireless access point across the room to my network.

dd-wrt comes in handy on old, linksys. Carry it to the beach when we stay at our house and use it to connect to any unsecured wireless hotel connection I can find and feed it to the house. Foxman have not tried it as my main firewall connection to cable modem and I suspect it would be better than old linksys router with no wireless ie. no dd-wrt but the fact monowall runs at speed of whaterver pc you run it on makes me think even old linksys with wrt would not be close. Monowall recommends p=4 3.0 cpu for "line speed" but I think that's overkill as my 1.7 celeron sees no stress even with multiple torrent clients running on multiple macines on my network.

I came in here to post this. DDWRT on an old Linksys or Buffalo or whatever wireless router is your best bet. Theres no point in losing the space that a desktop uses or spending the money on the extra electricity that the desktop will use, when a 40 dollar router will take care of it.

Bubb, good stuff. Wanting to work on VPN when I get a chance next week or two, might want to connect one from work and also hook mother in on a vpn so I can work on her stuff remotely without driving a mile or two. Prolly a 486 or something will do as a firewall but who has a 486 laying around anymore? A 1.7 celeron was something I had idle..... have a p-4 2.0 I/m about to switch it to that has much quieter fans. Thinking about buying a 1 unit rack with one of the cheap/new atom cpu's for a rackmount firewall solution in the basement.
why vpn for remote work? there are sooo many other easier ways to do that.

and i have a 486. it used to run pirated satelite code for all the channels...
