    Default Help Planing Wood

I've got 40 or 50 heartpine boards of varying widths that I need planed for wall panelling. Anybody know someone that might do this for me?

Call some of your local cabinet shops. You better go over those old boards with a metal detector though because if it happens to screw up a set of knives someone is going to charge you a nice "fee". I have a 24" Powermatic in the shop at my mom's and those knives were like $600.00.

x2 on using a magnetometer to find any old metal in the boards

I've seen bench top planers for sale on craiglist for a coupla hunert bucks, don't know what someone would charge to plane your boards, but at least you'd have an excuse to buy a manly tool

Thanks, LL, I'll talk to Rob. Rob - you out there? I did buy a tabletop planer. Its not up to the job. I got a couple of beautiful planks after running them through like 15 times eack. Heartpine is very hard, gummy, and the threat of hidden nails is a problem. You definitely need a hoss of a planer. The widest boards I have are 13.5", only a few of those.

He's been pretty busy lately, I would just give him a ring at Salty's.

If your making paneling, I would advise you to take the time and route a grove in one side and a tounge in the other, or if your in construction, a dick and a pussy. It will make the finish job, a little more "finished", As far as the planer, I got one about like you have, and you need an industrial planner, or get some new carbide tip blades, they eat faster, and give you a smother finish, but they are pricy, and if your planner dosent get up to enough RPM's then your wastin your time.
