    Default New Camera

I know this has been discussed at length here, but I don't feel like searching through everything. I'm ready to buy a camera that is more than just a point and shoot $100 camera.
I know very little about photography, and what SLR and DSLR mean, but I want a good quality camera. I'll mainly be taking pictures of my kids while they play sports and some still shots so I don't need anything with a big lens that will zoom way out there. I know Cannon and Nikon make good cameras, but what else should I be looking for in a camera? I've looked online at several different cameras, but there are so many options it's confusing. What is the most practical lens that will give me the most bang for my buck? 18-55mm , 75-300mm?

    And go...

So if I understand this correctly what you're saying is you know the info you want is out there but you're too damned lazy to go search for it. So as a reward for your laziness you want other folks that are capable of answering your question, which I assume have already answered in other threads you could search for, to repost the same damn thing again for you because you feel special????

    Let me help you.....

Not quite, but it happens everyday on here. Just so you know, I did use the search function. I was ten pages deep of the five hundred when I decided to stop. So you can get off your high horse...

There are several guys on this site that know what they are talking about when it comes to cameras, photography, and the basic necessities of what I'll need for what I'm looking at doing. I want their opinions, not yours.

Well have the same and it's pretty top notch. Even with limited skills

Rubberhead, BMiller, Squatty, anyone?? Think I've narrowed it down to either a Nikon D3300 or the Canon Eos T5. I've found both that come with multiple lenses. Any pros/cons on either of these?

Some good advice was given to me on this site, and that was to go into a store that sells them and handle the models that you have narrowed it down to. I went and handled Nikons and Cannons and automatically, the Nikon felt better for me.

A lot of the advise that I've read was, most DSLR's will basically do the same things. It's all in the lens.

I don't think you can go wrong with either the Canon T5 or the Nikon D3300.

I've long been a fan of Nikon optics. I don't think there's a better value for optical quality.

I only got a Canon camera because I had several Canon friends that were willing to let me use their lenses. But, once you buy your first expensive lens, you're pretty much stuck with that manufacturer.

The only complaint my Nikon friends have with their cameras is that the lenses tend to be a little more expensive than Canon for the same size/f-stop and quality.

But, of the two you listed the Nikon goes to a native ISO of 12800 where the Canon only goes to ISO 6400 meaning the Nikon will be functional with one less stop of light than the Canon. The ISO ratings are a little subject, though, so you might want to find a sample image of both cameras at ISO 6400 and compare.

I hope this helps; if not let me know.

Thanks Rubberhead. That's the type of info I was seeking.

Ditto RH. You'll be pleased with the t5 -- the photo and video option is great.

Honestly Squatty, this won't be much of a hobby. Just taking good pictures of my kids is mainly what I'll be doing.

I just like having quality photos. Either choice will be good.

You already got some good advice...and Squatty was only half kidding ( you start shooting sports ( more than Dad with a camera stuff) or wildlife and it can get expensive fast)

Here is a decent review of the cameras you have in mind and a few others

Btw-- Nikon and Canon have an extensive collection of lens--Sony not as many

    good luck and have fun
