    Default Opening Morning Killin'

Got up plenty early to beat whoever would try and get to my spot on the club before I........got there only to find I was no the only early riser as a truck was right there in my spot......I eased on down and found a way into the block I was unfamiliar with but in close local to the birds I was targeting.......hit the woods and sit down waiting.....I hear a gobble behind me and spin in his direction....As I wait for him to fly down the other party comes down the road and is continuously calling at this bird which was unnecessary......I am paying attention to the bird when I hear him pitch down then a loud series of yelps behind me cuts loose and it is the other hunters setting up 40 yards behind me so I stand and let them know I am there with a series of yelp and erratic hand waving so not to catch a load of hevi-shot.........the acknowledge and I sit back down and get to work on this bird and yelp a few times in which he awnsers and comes in to 40 yards and I see something is funny about this bird......he keeps drummin into me and I see it is a super Jake with full gobble,Jake Fan and Beard, with a full drum as well....he makes it to 5 yards and I let him strut around for a while and I move my hand to let him know I am there.....he put's away in a safe direction and then as jakes do trys to cut a circle around me in to the gun range of the other hunters which smoke him........I get up go over and they ask me why I didnt shoot him.....I said well I knew it was a Jake......the guy has not seen the bird yet and goes over and said I had no idea it was a Jake because he was Struttin,Drummin and Gobbling.....I say my congrats and part ways to strike another bird up.....I sit and hear a group of hens fire up and immediatly they are cut off by a Gobbler w/ them......I chase these birds back and forth through the woods to no avail as the hens are taking them where they want to and that is not my direction......I make a decision to go around the block and come in the way he is headed.....I make my way around there walk in about 300 yards hit the call and he slams it @ 300yards away.....I cut the distance and call again,he is on the way......he strolls in departed from his hens at 40 yards to my smile face and drooling Cruella......she barks and game over......Awesome Opening Morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll post up the measurements for the contest in a bit!!!!

Congrats. I'm just glad for you that you were patient and got a good look at the beard. I have been impatient in the past and busted a good gobbling, spittin and drummin super jake and it SUCKS. Nothing as bad as walking up to your bird and seeing nubs on the legs where those hooks were supposed to be. I'd be lying if I claimed this only happened once (I've done it twice- can blame it on thick cover in one instance, not in the other). Since then, several good gobbling (and more likely than not mature birds) have come in to range and gotten a pass because I couldn't verify age.
