Pretty much.
I wish I could breathe life back in him, if I could I'd hunt him again tomorrow. - Ben Rodgers Lee

What do the veterinarians think about that high level of protein and fat.
I would think that would be what walker hounds or Alaskan sled dogs need.
10-15 retrieves a day doesn't qualify as a working dog.

I would argue otherwise. Go do 10-15 suicide sprints through a flooded ricefield and see how winded you get. Mix in a few good 300 yard runs for those sailing cripples you might want to pick up. Still not exhausted yet? Make sure to take off some of your layers in between sprints and sit on a cold wet bench in your basic thermals. Still full of piss and vinegar? Run the quarter mile back to the truck for the ride home and only feed yourself one meal the rest of the day.
A properly trained and worked retriever burns a ton of calories. I give my dog some rest days, but for the most part he is training or hunting. If we are hunting deeper water, where he has to swim, he is burning even more calories. Factor in the caloric needs of a dog to withstand cold temperatures for hours at a time, and high fat/protein diets are absolutely necessary in a working retriever.
Does "drake" the house dog that leaves the couch twice a year for a wood duck hunt need 30/20 food? Absolutely not. But your true hunting retriever that is working constantly in the field and being campaigned in the HT/FT circuit is very much in need of that nutrition.

I feed 30/20 during the season but back down to 26/16 in off season. Higher fat content helps a dog run cooler in hot weather

For me it's about more closely copying what a dog would eat on the wild. Wolves don't eat corn. Also, I lost a golden retriever at nine years old to cancer so I wanted to make a change this time.
However, I have to chuckle at my own plan because as I try to give the dog a more natural diet, I then turn around and give it some poison every month so I don't have a flea problem.
damn, thats pretty funny.
But yeah, like Tha Dick said, if he's just being a picky bitch, take the bowl up and he'll eat next time.
If there's problems with the high protein, try something different. Ive been feeding all mine a 26/20 mix the last year and they're doing great on it. the 30/20 in victor and pro plan was coming out like soft serve chocolate milk.
my dog aint picky and will eat anything I put in her bowl. she's always been that way. she's hell on deer corn at the club and will eat 4-5 ears around the campfire at night and be shitting corn like Pez dispenser the next morning.
To test my " eat anything" theory I fed her a dirt clod a few years ago and she ate the damn thing.
There is some research that says dogs do much better if they had the higher protein diet year-round versus just during hunting season.
