Good stuff. Life got in the way, and I didn't get my swamp planted this fall. Turns out it was a good thing, because it has pretty much been dry since last spring.

It looks like you forgot to leave some nails sticking out to snag waders. How are kids going to get the real experience of duck hunting unless their waders leak?

This is a great thread. Glad you gave an update. Rice needs a couple applications of nitro or else it will give you an empty hull. Please update this thread as you go along this year if you get the time.

Do yourself a favor and plant cypress on the 4 corners of the blind now.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

Glad to know that others may be learing from this project.
Due to new position at work and travel, the duck swamp did not get any improvements this off season, other than the new blind being built.

I drained and seeded with rice labor day weekend. Sprayed weeds and fertilized. Very poor germination due to yet another dry spring. I am throwing in the towel on rice. Without the ability to add on water to manage weeds I think it's hopeless. Fall panicum took over the last few years.

There are 40 ducks and geese using now, mostly for roost. I had some rice and jap millet make seed. Plus some native spike rush, barnyard, smart weeds.

The Clemson pond levelers are still doing well. I have a simpler version now. 8inch pipe with chain link wrapped around. Also diamond shaped hog panel fence around it has kept beavers and trash out.

Next Spring I am going to try growing Chiwapa millet, with a mix of smartweed and barnyard.

Get your Chiwapa early. Like real early.

    Great looking place.

Yes. I have the equipment to do it. I would have to put up a deer fence. That would also involve a lot more time for ground prep after it dries out. I may go that route one day... if I can't find a successful mix of grain & moist soil combo.

My 7yo son is finally showing interest and has been helping me out. Once he starts killing ducks in here we will kick it up a notch.

Bait the hell out of it and don't shoot it this year.

Awesome looking spot. Never step foot in after flooding until the day you shoot...
