    Default Decoy number

So my buddy is talking to a fella about public duck hunting. He said they've done well this season so far.

He said they get out there at 1 AM and put about 50 dozen decoys. Not 50 but 50 dozen. 600 deeks

OK I may could handle the 1 AM part a few times, but putting out and picking up 600 decoys. No Thank you.......

I scout the birds, see how many are in the hole.. Then put the same kind and numbers of decoys out to mimic them..

I have the same outlook as Pbiz, but don't use big numbers. If the ducks are there and its a small hole or slough, then 3-5 in the right spot will do the trick. Always mimic your species.

Unless you shooting divers in the river then you need to start about 2 days in advance and put out about 5 full boat loads of coot decoys with 5 diver decoys in it.

I hate putting a bunch of decoys out, mainly because i hate picking up a lot of decoys

Please don't let my buddy see this thread. We have this argument every time we hunt together. He wants to double the Atlantic migration, I want to have more than 2" of freeboard.

What really stinks is to put out a huge spread, then shoot 1 bufflehead.

Not true, you really just need to mimic. Sunday morning i put out about the same number of decoys out as i saw scouting saturday..30. We limited at 8:30, had one bluebill that didnt take to the decoys the rest piled in.

Long lines are the ticket to putting out that many. Anything more than a dozen or so single cords/weights, no thank you.

Like bog and P said, mimic what you see. When's the last time you saw 40 or so birds sitting in a slough perfectly contect? That's what I thought.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

I was just making a joke. On average I usually stay in the 15-40 range depending on where we are at.
