    Default Painting Jon Boat

Just wondering if any of you guys have much experience painting boats. I told my Gpa i would paint his for him and just want to find the best way and process to use. The boat is a little older and it has been in the sun which has made it lighter than we want the base color to be. The paint is rubbing off slightly in a dusty form in some places. What is the best way to go about this? Thanks in advance for any help

first get you some fine grit sand sponges and get any debris or old paint off, then paint away.

pressure wash it first- then sand and skuff-- self etching primer if you want to do it right or go straight to some quality paint- you gonna camo it or solid color?

I've painted several. I've only done 3 from the bare alluminum. I just roughed em up a little and painted away. They have all held up well.

Pressure wash it real good, if need be you can sand it to rough it up some. Then paint. Did mine in a day with about 10 spray cans or so, inside & out. Touch it up every year with a can of paint.

I use Purple Power cleaner/degreaser. Cover the entire boat and let sit for a little while then pressure wash inside and out. The Purple Power is an acid base, it etches as well as cleans the oxidation, dirt and grease off.

    Default Camo

Has anyone ever put a clear matt lacquer on after finishing the camo? Saw where this is what they did when painting guns and was wondering if it would help camo hold up a little better.

I would not put anything that may increase the "shine" you want a textured finish- hopefully the different paints will have different amounts of "glare" and aide in concealment- a clear finish of any single product makes one big "lump"
what may be a matte finish when applied may start to glare in due time- try it on a small area and see if it has ANY glare properties.

from what i understand lacquer and water dont go very well together, and a matte acrylic finish will cloud up when wet.

Use an etch primer or a epoxy primer if you want it to stay for a while.

Take plenty of pictures of your process.

Just make sure you got a real good sanded & clean base for the paint to adhere to.

scotch brite, wash it down good, run over any bare spots with decent rattle can primer, roll it wit some good paint and a 4" foam bull nose roller. For paint Im liking the Parkers duck paint.
