    Default Ford F150 transmission

    Transmission has developed a pretty good "bump" between 45-50. Otherwise transmission shifts fine. Dr. Google suggests it a common torque converter problem in the older (2005) F150's. Would replacing only the torque converter solve the issue, or is the issue causing enough wear to warrant replacing transmission?

    Is it a single bump or does it feel like you are driving over a ruble strip.

    If it's a rumble strip sensation, it is likely a misfire due to worn roller rockers. You will likely need a new cam.

    If it's just a bump I wouls ride it till it dies. It's going to probably cost around the same tonfix it now or later. So just see how long it lasts.

    My 2017 developed it and I had the transmission fluid changed and the motorcraft version of shudder fix added and haven’t felt it since that was done.

    Yes add friction modifier to fluid May give it some extra time.

    I would bet money you have a bad coil or plug. My 05 does it about every 25k. I feel it come along, plug my scanner up and find the misfire. Change that coil and/or plug out and rock on. I have 250k on original trans. I would rule it out with coils and plugs before heading to the transmission shop. I buy 8 coils at a time on Amazon for what one costs at NAPA. Seem to last just as long.


    Next time you feel the bump, turn O/D off and see if it clears up. Only seems to bump in overdrive.

    If it was a coil would it be evident only when accelerating between 45-50? Wouldn’t there be a drop in fuel mileage or other symptoms?

    I notice no drop in performance or fuel economy when I have a bad coil. Hell it only gets 12mpg to start with. I notice it when I'm just barely on the throttle cruising on 17 in the 45mph range and the truck gets a small load on it, IE climbing a hill or bridge. Usually if I knock it out of overdrive it quits the jumping, and the rpm from the other 7 cylinders overshadow the misfire. Its a weird issue, but as soon as i replace that bad coil I don't have the issue anymore until another coil fails. Like I said, this may not be your issue, but it sure is a much cheaper troubleshoot than a new trans/converter. I never get a check engine light for the misfire, but my OBD2 scanner will do what is called a "$06 monitor" and will show me misfires in real time. I plug it in, drive it around for about 20 min, then read the data BEFORE you shut the truck off. Its a cheap amazon Icar bluetooth obd monitor and an app called OBD Fusion.

    It's a Ford. If it were a Chevy, that would be the problem as well.

    Set it to misfire counter
    When it bumps see if a cyl is showing a misfire. If so replace coil and plug
    If it doesn’t set a misfire, you’re on borrowed time for a trans

    Check the trans fluid, see if it’s burnt or smells burnt
    More fuel = more boost!!

    Thanks, will definitely hope for misfire, but if not I will be in contact for transmission.

    Just thinking about this thread tonight as I put a new coil in today. Was jumping like crazy at 55 with any load on it. Quick scan and ready to go.

    Had codes checked and all I get are a catalytic converter or o2 sensors. I can cut off overdrive (tow mode) and skip is gone. Seems to be in transmission sadly.
