Yep, red bellied. I come across em raking leaves sometimes. Bright red or reddish orange belly. Harmless.

Sneaky snakes are sneaky to identify at that size for dang sure. I could get on board with red belly but I would still call it a rat until it got big enough to be what I know is a red belly...

Is it the same red belly as what I know as a “red-bellied water snake?”

Can’t say I’ve ever seen a juvi red belly.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

It is a redbelly snake, Storeria occipitomaculata. NOT the same as the red-bellied water snake (which now are called "Plain-bellied water snakes"). These small, fossorial snakes eat worms and slugs and are basically a "first cousin" to the Dekay's brown snake.

Looks like a red belly for sure. I find these guys around the house often, usually under pine straw or under the leaves of my live oak, basically where the worms are. We even kept 2 in a terrarium for a while last summer and the coloration between the two varied a good bit.

There's a number of similar species that stay under 12 inches or so. That one doesn't look to be a juvy, they're just small snakes. Full grown for them might be 10 inches. Neat little snakes.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!
