Looking to replace the wife's kid hauler and found a low mileage, 2012 model year with 3.5L V6. Anyone have experience with these? Recurring problems or known issues?

I found some descriptions that an internal water pump fails prior to 150K miles. $2-3K to fix because of labor to reach it. That is if the failure is caught before causing severe damage.
I had a 2013 with no issues. Sold it to someone on here. I can't recall their name. Just bought my oldest a 2014 that seems to be pretty solid.
We have 5 in our fleet.
Water pump and timing chain repairs on 2 at 90k- $2650
Torque converter replacement on 3 around 80k- $3000
Steering rack on 2 at 60k-$1300
I wouldn’t own one.
I've got a 2014 4WD with 160k. It's a sure footed as a cat on icy/snowy roads. I haven't done the water pump thing nor have I had any major repair issues. It's been 100% reliable. I do think I'll go ahead and get the water pump thing done, though, because I plan to drive if for a while longer.

There was a list of stuff done while they were in there. I'll have to pull the receipt up and see.
the internet sure makes buying things really difficult.
online reviews and customer service!
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
I’ve bought my wife 2. We had a 2015 for 4ish years, no major repairs. I had to replace one sensor was like $100 fix. Now have a 21 with 27k miles, it’s been reliable. My wife loves the explorers

“… duckhunting stands alone as an outdoor discipline. It has a tang and spirit shared by no other sport—a philosophy compounded of sleet, the winnow of unseen wings, and the reeks of marsh mud and wet wool. No other sport has so many theories, legends, casehardened disciples and treasured memories.”
--John Madson, The Mallard, 1960
"Never trust a duck hunter who cares more about his success than his dog's."
The new explorers are now rear wheel drive and you can get them in almost the same power train as the new Rangers. Should solve the water pump and transmission problems.
But knowing Ford something else will likely plague it.
