Waterfowl migration shows signs of heating up

The big push of larger ducks is heading this way.

Mike Pierce of River Valley Outfitters in Wabasha reports hunters on the Mississippi River are seeing more mallards, gadwall and pintails, as well as more canvasbacks-- which are illegal to shoot this year.

With cold and maybe a bit of snow predicted near the Canadian border this weekend, we could see even more birds move in.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's aerial waterfowl survey of the Mississippi River from last week found a huge increase compared with the week before, though last week's count included a few more pools further south on the river. It went from 21,665 to 133,510, with most of the increase coming in diver ducks, mallards and geese. Only a few swans flew in, though that number should dramatically increase soon.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers up north are reporting the migration has started in earnest.

Troy Richards of Roseau reported seeing more scaup (bluebills), while those in Moorhead, Crookston and Fergus Falls said much the same thing. Officers in Erskine and the Mille Lacs area, however, reported fewer ducks.

In this area, Julie Siems in Faribault said waterfowl hunters are only moderately successful, but Tom Hutchins in Albert Lea said he's seeing teal, woodies, mallards, wigeon, gadwall and shovellers in the bag.

Those checking hunters along the Mississippi in this region said hunters weren't doing real well in the Red Wing area but hunters averaged about two ducks per person around LaCrescent. All officers reported new birds are moving in.
