Default Planting jap millet and sorghum?

I have an area that I can flood that the water depth varies on one end from about 3 1/2' to a foot on the other end. I was thinking about planting some type of sorghum on the deeper end and planting the other half in jap millet. How much do ducks really like sorghum and are there any specific varieties of sorghum that I should try to plant or does anyone have any better ideas of what to plant in the next month or so that may help hold some birds this winter. Thanks for any help.

I'd stick with Jap Millet if at all possible. I've never heard much good about ducks and sorghum. My choice would be corn first then jap millet.

if you dont plant milo asap, it wont matter.
millet in a month. deer love milo, and will clean the tops off.
also consider your water depth with the flooded milo. the wildlife variety grows to about 4 or 5 feet.

Thanks for the info, I tried corn Huntin, but the soil is very poor and had minimal success with it.

The thing about planting corn is that it can always be reborn in one way or another as the season roles along.

stick with the millet... though sorgum is better in a smaller area if you can keep the deer out. Millet takes quite a hit from songbirds in plots less than several acres.

We try to plant millet around Aug 15 to keep the songbirds from totally whacking it. As much rain as we have had, the hole is half full again and I doubt we will get a chance to plant any at all.

We have about half an acre in the impoundment (adjacent to the corn) that we just got cleared up so that it can be disked. We're going to plant some browntop around the first week of August.

We had a little rain at our place so we are going to plant a bag this weekend and hopefully it will get a litle more rain to get it up in time. Would any of y'all suggest putting another 50lb bag out around the end of Sept? we wont hunt it until the 2nd season.
