    Default Wood duck boxes

If you don't put them up you need to start. I saw a pair of ducks this morning in a tree in my back in down town Summerton. The hen was looking for a hole to nest in. I watched her for a few minutes from my window as she flew from branch to branch looking for a good spot to lay. We have less nest trees now than ever before for ducks to use. The main reason is because there is not much of a market for hardwood logs and big demand for hardwood pulpwood so hardwood rotations are much shorter not allowing time for trees to mature and have a cavity big enough to nest in. Another reason was hurricane Hugo.

You don't have to have some big piece of land with a pond on it for ducks to use boxes those ducks will nest just about anywhere even your back yard.

They started laying in my boxes on Jan 20th. They will be hatching any day.

Saw a drake on top of one of mine 2 weeks ago.

Floods from October on absolutely decimated a TON of wood duck boxes as well as prime habitat. It's NEVER too late to get boxes up but now is definitely the time!

Do y'all make your own boxes or can you buy them somewhere?

Putting up a few new ones tomorrow and straightening a few others. I'm sure there are a few birds already using them but the rush will come later.

DNR gives them away for free each year. Made by inmates. You can only get 4 at a time from what I understand but they are super easy to make.

I've tried filling out their app the past 3 years. They have yet to contact me back like they say they will.

I put in for boxes 2 years ago and picked up 4 from Clemson about 6 months after they initially told me I'd be on the waiting list.

I have received boxes every year from DNR. Something might be wrong on your app, email address? They should be sending out notice in a few weeks. I will try to remember to send you a PM with contact info. I also go out and fill them up on public water.
