    Default Synthetic 1187 20 ga.

Looking at a really nice used one. Any good / bad points or things to look for? I'm familiar with 1100s but didn't know if there were any major differences in them.
    Thanks

My son has been shooting one for 4 years with no issues. The gas system is only marginally different from the 1100. As has already been said, keep it clean. I am guessing it probably has the matte "Express" type finish. I use RIG for storage and oil it after every use. That finish was a rust magnet until it beacame seasoned with the RIG.

What is this RIG you speak of?

    RIG - "rust inhibiting grease"

Old school gun metal protector. It works.

O.k., school me on the "Activator" (1187, 20ga.). Leave it in only for dove shells?

I leave it in for all load types. It is not like an Auto 5 where you need to adjust the rings for different loads.

I got the gun, was doing some reading up on it, and read about the actions bars getting bent when shooting 3" or magnum stuff in it, if you didn't take the "Activator" out. I mainly got it for doves and rabbits, but wouldn't hesitate to deer or duck hunt with it, just don't want to screw it up. Thanks

They're nice shotguns and for the right price I'd get one. They are heavy though and Remingtons matte finish is prone to rusting. But they don't recoil that bad and they're somewhat easy to tear down and clean. For around $600 they're the best autoloading 20 you can get. But they're not the best autoloading 20 on the market IMO. Overall, i'd recommend getting one though.

I still want a Franchi, but found this one, like new, good price.

My son has shot 3" steel through his and we never took that part out. I'll have to go read the manual again to make sure.

According to Remington, the barrel seal activator should be removed on the 11-87 12 GA Super Magnum when shooting magnum (think 3" & 3-1/2") loads.

Keep it in place for the 20 GA 11-87.
