Pros vs cons.
I have one. I use it to stream music through our surround sound and outdoor speakers when we have friends or family over to cookout or if my little guy is outside playing. It streams Netflix and other things. You can rent movies through ITunes if you want. I use to be able to mirror Gamecock baseball from my iPad to my TV but the app that use to stream the in house feed is not around anymore. Mine was a gift from a friend so I couldn't complain on the price.
What are you trying to do? Depending on that answer, there may be a lot cheaper option. I have a Samsung smart tv, google chromecast and my mom has Apple TV. I've played with them all. I can do all I need from chromecast. From Netflix to streaming pandora or iTunes. Chromecast cost $30.
Sports is a weakness of internet based tv. Can get sling for $20 a month to get espn/2.
We just switched to Sling, sports is a weakness but can add sports package for $5/month to get all ESPN channels and SEC network. Digital antennae to get local channels for free like ABC, NBC, CBS, etc.
We are using Amazon Fire Stick
Some issues, I don't watch near as much as the wife. BIG adjustment for her with not having DVR. It will buffer every now and then. We've got AT&T for internet and Directv guy said there is a data limit, but I figured he was trying to keep me from canceling. Time will tell if we go over though.
Overall I like it so far. Sling+sports/Netflix/HuluPlus/Amazon Prime will run $50/month vs. Directv our bill was up to $125
And you can cancel any of these at any time

We have the roku and antenna. Works well for us. Not much buffering.
Google chrome is what you want. Direct tv allows you to watch tv online. Using google chrome download the chromecast extenssion. Stream your sports online and cast it to chrome cast. Bing bang boom. Very simple and only a one time purchase for 30 bucks.
I know I am late to the thread but the bottom line is if you have an iPhone, Mac or iPad you should buy an AppleTV just for the mirroring alone. BTW they expected to announce an upgrade on Sept 9th. MG

I agree with Maggie. I bought chromecast first, can't mirror iPad. Took it back and got Apple TV. I like it much better than chromecast.
You can stream apple devices to chromecast if you have the app. I do it all the time. It will not however mirror image.
Just ordered the "new" chromecast. Anyone have it yet? Is there a noticeable difference in streaming?
$30 chromecast will work fine if you will just use it for WatchESPN, Pandora or Youtube
