I've never used soap. I know some of the old timers used to bait their trotlines with Ivory soap. They claimed it worked real good.

I have used a telephone to call them up. The phone magneto we used had been modified. Instead of hand cranking it, someone had put a DC electric motor with a coupling to the shaft. All we had to do was touch the wire to a car battery and that thing would kick up the voltage.

We used to put in below the Buzzard Roost dam and float down the Saluda River. When we came to a pothole we'd drop the leads in the water then touch the wire to the battery and that old phone would hum. That sucker would knock a big catfish up on the bank!

We touched it off in a pothole one evening and I swear when the power kicked in a 5 lb catfish jumped out on the bank, climbed 50' up a sycamore tree and crawled into a squirrel bed to get away from the shock! Darndest thing I ever saw. Who knew a catfish could climb a tree?

When I was a teenager someone had put a trotline in one of my favorite rockfish holes. After getting hung up on it for about two weeks I started removing it from the area since it was not tagged and obviously not being maintained. It was baited with ivory soap. Had plenty of catfish and even a few stripers on it. Had one 60ish pound flathead that had decided to eat a little blue on it as well.

You can catch catfish on a pine cone.

    They will literally try anything.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
