I have a 1978 20 horse Merc and would like to convert to electric start. Where do I begin? Owners manual says moter is electric start ready. What would it take other than a starter and a syloniod{sp} and switch?

Thats all you would need besides the wire. The bad thing is that the stater isn't cheap. I just priced a starter for a friend's 50hp Johnson and it was 190 bucks that was with a discount. I guess it depends on how bad you want it.
    Good luck.

On the small Merc's, you may need to change the flyweel as well. See if your current flywheel has teeth for the starter gear. Mercury sells the entire conversion kit, including the starter button and charging system if you want to charge the battery as you run. The kit is around $350 if I remember correctly and figure another hour for installation. Check with your dealer and he'll be able to help you.
