    Default Yamaha trim motor?

Yesterday after riding for a while, noticed the trim wasnt working. All I could get was the solenoid clicking, up and down. On the switch on the throttle and the motor itself. No corrosion, batteries are good. When I tapped on the trim motor itself, the motor worked. The motor is not sluggish at all, just on and off working.

I am at work today, so can not troubleshoot till tomorrow. Since, the solenoids are not on the trim unit iself, they are in the outboard, can I go ahead and assume the motor itself is bad. I will test the trim motor tomorrow, by attaching it directly to a battery, bypassing the relays. If I can safely assume its the motor, i can go ahead and order one and get the boat in the water this weekend.

By the way, motor is a 2006 4 stroke 90. Thanks in advance. TJ

    I'll bet you've got a bad relay.

I hope so, that is easier then the motor swap out. Either way its around 200 to fix. Testing the motor itself will hope to decide it. Maybe it was coincidence, me tapping on the trim unit, let it work.

Those relays are cheap. I'd swap those out and go from there.

I wouldnt say cheap, about $ 115, from what I am seeing online. The relay for the motor itself looks like a fuse block.

Part 39. Unless this is something else.

I would replace brushes with new ones and clean the armature with a piece of sandpaper. Sound like a build up of carbon dust from the old brushes.

First of all, that schematic is for a 2stroke 90, not a 4stroke.

Secondly, I think you may thank me after reading through this.

I found the thread last night, I was def going to try that out. I was just assuming the trim motor until I tested it. Thanks for correcting me, just posted the wrong one. Thats why the first post said 200. Thanks for the help though. Will let yall know tomorrow about the motor when i test it.

By the way, I'd sell my motor if the gosh-damn'd tilt/trim relay cost me $190.

    That's a fact.

I just fixed a Yamaha 40 that was doing the EXACT same thing.
I cleaned the armature, scuffed the brushes with a piece of Emory cloth, replaced the O-ring and it works just like it should. good luck!
