What are you doing with it? Under the bed? Hunt?

Get soemthing with a "transfer bar" for safety from drops or other hits on the hammer.

Carry as a side while hunting. How much would a S & W or rugar cost me?

Either one will suit you. A good carry gun will have a 4" barrel. A good hunting gun will have a 6" - 10" barrel. Either brand will suit you fine - individual preference.

I can't quote a price, but for a hunting gun I would like to have a Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 Mag. As a carry gun, I would look at a double action Ruger, GP-100(I think) is the model.

S & W has made quite a quality comeback lately and I would look real hard at that. Most of my gun nut friends would not look at anything else.

What ever it is you look at, keep in mind that it seems that all gun store people have a preference and you are jist plain stupid to look at anything else.

CWPINST should have some god recomendations if he posts up.

Yes, I have a friend or two.

The GP-100 is stronger than the 686, but the 686 has a much better trigger. I prefer the 686. Both are very good guns though. This might start a flame war, but I would stay away from a Taurus. They are not bad guns, but we have had trouble with them from time to time in our CWP classes. We have seen two that were out of time so bad, the firing pin would hit the case head instead of the primer We have seen others shave lead from time to time. It is not fun to be beside one of those.
If it ain\'t accurate at long distance, then the fact that it is flat shooting is meaningless.

My 2 cents..... Buy what is comfortable. Shoot as many different ones as possible then buy what you shoot the best. If self defense is a consideration, buy quality above a bargain. If you might have to depend on it to save your life, you gotta decide how much are you worth. S&W and Ruger are in the top of the class when it comes to quality.

Like the above post I too say buy quality, you may even want to look at a used one, I had to walk outside at 12:30 AM Sunday with my 357 Dan Wesson in hand after hearing what I thought was my car alarm, mine has interchangeable barrels I have a 4,6 & 8 inch, barrel -- the 8 makes it quite heavy but she's accurate.
I sold a nickel Liberty western style revolver .44 in great shape with a cowboy holster and belt for $250 a few years back that sumbeetch was a ear ringing kickin mule. The holster was worth $100, I shoulda kept it.

I have a Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel. I bought it about 10 years ago and have been pleased with it. I think I got it used for $350 or so, and then had a trigger job done on it. It fits me and I shoot it pretty well. However, it is heavier than I would like for a regular carry gun, so I bought a S&W Airweight in .38 a couple years ago. I can't shoot it as well, but I can carry it in my pocket and can't even tell it's there. It is also a good tractor/boat gun with snakeshot. I rarely take the Ruger out anymore.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Ruger or S&W, just figure out which one you are most comfortable with. As everyone has mentioned above, what you will use it for will determine the barrel length. And ditto what RP said about the transfer bar. Most modern revolvers should have it; otherwise you need to leave the hammer down on an empty cylinder.
