Hospitals buying practices and employing physicians have nothing to do with that. Hospitals are buying practices because physicians cannot make it any longer with the downward pressures on reimbursements coupled with the increased costs of running a business.
Effective April 1 they get another 2% cut. The problem is their staff will still want health insurance, beg for a raise, and insurance, taxes, and other operating expenses still go up, not down. Small practices are a thing of the past because in addition to these issues they cannot negotiate on a grand scale for supplies and/or managed care rates, so they are getting squeezed on both ends.
I buy practices every day. The docs cannot stand the rat race anymore.It is sad really, but it is what it is.
Check out prices for various procedures in a town where the hospital owns a majority of the physician practices compared to a town that has many independent diagnostic clinics and physician practices.....
The monopolization of community healthcare is in fact one of the problems with healthcare today.... It isnt the largest problem, but certainly a significant one. Sadly, the government has left doctors with few other options.
