So do you want the cottonwood tree too?

LOL. I see my post was resurrected. I don't think I want it.

I believe some of you would argue with someone saying the sky is blue.......Shelbourne's dendrology class was boring as hell. The twig BS about put me over the edge.
Woodie,
There is a green ash and a white ash........this tree is a Green Ash.
Water Tupelo.

Interesting...
Here's two more pictures. The first is another shot of the tree trunk bark in question. Remember to forget the leaves on the ground since it's laying next to the burn pile several hundred yards from where it was growing.
The second picture is of a live Sweet Gum located alongside my driveway. Some of the seed pods are still on the branches so there shouldn't be any question as to its ID.
I guess I need to go chop down a Sweet Gum and see if the woods match.

Here's what some of the wood chips I cut last week look like after drying out for a few days.
They are more like oak than gum, which supports the claim for Green Ash, I believe.
What say ye?

The leaves in the first pics have nothing to do with the tree in question...

how many of ya'll took forestry at Clemson?

So we're no further along in figuring out what kind of tree this is?
What do I need to do to help verify it one way or the other?

I suggest you accept the opinion of two foresters who actually identify trees daily and make a living at the trade!

Calibogue,
I'm ready, willing and able to accept the diagnosis of Ash/Green Ash, which makes a lot of sense to me after checking my ID books and the dried wood, etc... and, of course, listening to you experts.
Now the question is that since it's already fairly dried out whether I should cut and save some of it instead of pushing the entire log onto the burn pile. Some nice, straight ash boards might be handy around here... or for someone to make some stuff from.
I've also got a fairly decent size Persimmon tree to cut down at the wife's request. She's been after me for awhile now, so I'm thinking I'll 'beaver it' and let it dry on the stump for a few months. Too bad we don't still use Persimmon golf clubs!
Thanks.
