What’s the cheapest generic imazapyr for controlling sweet gum in a recently thinned loblolly stand? Is there something better to use?

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
Fire is so so... mostly top kill on the tracts we burn - and we have "expert's" doing the burn.

What time of year are they burning? Right now through September and October is the best time to do it. If the gum trees are over about 10ft tall fire will only stunt them and you would need to spray them! But anything under 10ft or so and a good hot growing season fire will kill the crap out of them!

We do it right... patchwork burns.

I’ve used a “dill & fill” technique on them…wood auger bit in a drill, squirt bottle of full strength glyphosate. Drill a couple holes, squirt some gly in them, and it’ll kill full size trees with zero problems. I tested this out last summer and it zapped them. No noticed side effects on surrounding trees of any kind.

This is what I use. One hack and one squirt per 6" of tree diameter. I give 'em all at least two regardless of size and they'll be dust in no time.
For small tress or areas I want to keep as open grass areas I don't plant, I fill a 55 gallon sprayer with Crossbow and that takes care of the seedlings. Pine, oak and gum.

I’ve about decided the only effective way to keep sweet gums knocked back is with a forestry mulcher followed by fire while the sprouts are small
Metsulfuron works well when mixed with triclopyr. It kills any hardwood and has foliar and root activity
I’m wanting to do a foliar application. This stand was burned three years ago and it knocked back a lot of gums but they are back. I want to kill them now and burn again next year.
