I had to put down my best friend for the last 13 years. Admittedly I never wanted a mutt in the first place, but my fiancé convinced me to get him in March of 2011. He was a lab mix of sorts and had short stubby ears. He was supposed to be her dog but took to me off the bat. He was never a field champion trial dog but held his own in the dove field or duck blind.

All three of my kids adored him. He made his rounds every night to each of their rooms to check on them. Every day when we would get home from work or a school he’d greet us at the door with a tail wag and a “smiling face”. Gauge was without a doubt the best dog I’ve ever had, and I’m gonna miss him more than I can possibly describe.ACF04A1D-8881-40BE-8EC9-9180C47B7B92.jpg

Good looking "mutt". 13 years is a pretty run IMO.

there just are not any words anyone can say. Their love is so pure, that we humans are simply not worthy. My prayers are with you and your family.

Your pup was one of the truly fortunate ones, to have had such an adoring family. Read that again...

Yes sir we had to put our 12 year old gal down a couple weeks ago. Took a few days to dry up around my house! It’s as hard as anything you’ll ever have to do I’m fairly certain.

The reason God gave them a shorter life span is so you could own 8-15 in your life span.

    Sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. The older I get the less I like people and the more I love my dog. God knew what he was doing when he created man's best friend.

Sorry to hear the news, but glad you got to spend that time with him, and vice versa, as you're all better for it, no doubt...

As one who has faced this more than once, my sympathy and healing prayers. They become so tightly woven into our life's fabric and those bonds are inseparable.

The only thing I've found that can help relieve the grief is puppy breath.

I had to put down my old dog Chaos a few months ago. He was the best retriever I'll ever have, without a close peer. When he was 10, he was diagnosed with Melanoma so I contacted the breeder and told him I needed another one closely related. I wanted to get the new dog while Chaos still had a chance to impart some of his wisdom on the young dog. As expected, the new dog picked up his house and blind manners from his mentor and needed very little input from me. On quail, he pointed immediately, backed with very little commanding and retrieved to hand (when I restrained Chaos). Thanks to modern miracles in the health field, Chaos lasted another two good years before the cancer overtook him. Putting him down was horrible but he need relief. I don't know how we could have managed the grief without the the distraction of the new dog and my little tracking weenie, Chloe. The new pup, Havoc, is now 2 and is showing real promise. He very biddable and has strong prey drive. He is an absolute fanatic about fishing. His favorite toy is the dummy launcher. He has very big shoes to fill but he is working hard to earn his place.

Very sorry for your loss. Get a puppy, not to replace your buddy but to honor him.
