Default Fly fishing help - upstate SC

I bought a fly fishing rod and plan to head up to the mountains sometime this week to fish. I’ll be fishing around Hwy. 11 and Table Rock area.

I’ve only been fly fishing once with a friend, and I’m hoping to start learning. What flies are the easiest to learn with this time of year and will still give me a shot at catching fish?

It’s been a few years since I wet any line so I’ll resist trying to remember the names, but here’s a good article you may enjoy reading. I’d pay particular attention to worms (San Juan varieties) and midges.

Here’s some more good detail you’ll want to study. I just wish I had the time to visit all of these streams.

Might be worth your time to make a trip to Dodson's in Travelers Rest. They're helpful and knowledgeable from what I've heard.

I hope to make it by the fly shops at some point, but both of those are a good bit out of the way for me.

I did check out the dnr trout book earlier, it was very in depth and helpful. Hoping to catch fish but mostly looking forward to getting away from technology and into the river.

This FB Group popped up the other day. Seems to be a fair amount of folks sharing reports, primarily about stockers, but info none the less.

I think most fly shops will tell you what patterns are working on which rivers over the phone. I'm not familiar with the area, but san juan worms, squiggly worms or Wooly buggers are a good bet. Not really prime time for dry flies, but as warm as its been you may see a few rises. My biggest challenge starting out was reading the stream to figure out where the fish should be and then making a good cast to that spot. Best of luck
