    Default Reclaim a Kudzu Field

We have an opportunity to pick up a new field this year. Approximately 15 acres that has been overrun with kudzu for more than 10 years.
The kudzu is well established. Has anyone ever done this? Was it worth all of the effort?

I am thinking we need to burn it off ASAP then start plowing and spray what comes back. Suggestions?

Should be dead now so burn it and spry the sprouts when green up comes, then spray again. It may take two to three years to wipe it out. Kudzu is really good at erosion control, the reason it was introduced but it turned into the monster that ate the south. Ground hogs seem to love Kudzu thickets.

It has very deep roots. Disc/burn now, disc in spring after it sprouts, and plant a roundup ready crop in spring.

If you disc and spray it after it sprouts but before it makes good leaves, you will starve the root system. It may take a while.

I've seen goats wipe out a hillside of Kudzu.

Years ago I had to clean up a patch of kudzu that was mature. I called the chemical rep and asked him what I needed to get rid of the kudzu. He looked me dead in the eye and told me to “sell the land”. That was only way to get of it. Made me laugh but it’s partially true.

Catdaddy had about the best prescription for managing kudzu. Repeated farming will also be fairly effective.

I got rid of about 3 acres a couple years ago. Go in there now and chisel plow the hell out of it. You will eventually pull up the tubers with the tines. Drag all the tubers into one spot and pile them up. Let them sit a couple days then go back and burn the pile. I did this and had 4 or 5 spots that sprouted over the spring and summer. Ran the chisel plow back through the same spot before I planted the fall deer plots and got those tubers up and threw them into the woods. This was about 3 years ago and I haven’t had a single spot come back. I’d do it now while they are dormant and sort of dried out

I had been told that keeping it mowed and sprayed would eventually cause it to exhaust itself and it would die off. I’ve been mowing and spraying an adjacent hillside like a mad man since I’ve owned the place and it hasn’t slowed down

Crossbow will kill the shat out of it. May take a couple applications to get the root balls.

Livestock are not an option for us as we do not own the land and will not be fencing it in. Chemical and mechanical methods will be used. I am encouraged to hear that some of you have had previous success in kudzu eradication. We are going to give it a shot. One of my other concerns is the lack of doves across the state this year, not just in our immediate area. Not encouraged on that front.
