Been a long time since I put a deer on here but this hunt was too good not to share. My 8 year old has been bound and determined to kill this buck that gave us a run for our money for near a week.
We slipped in as soon as I got off work last Monday and around 6 I catch a doe and a yearling bail out of their bed in the thicket to our right just 70 yards away. I felt sure it wasn’t from us and I quickly picked up his tines in the thicket. A upper neck shot was presented a few times as the buck chased the does in a circle and he finally said “dad, you shoot him, I can’t get on him in there”. I refused, he’d put in his time and if those does made it to the lane, he’d follow. For the next 45 minutes we were on pins and needles getting glimpses of bucks through the brush, chasing, rubbing trees. Finally, right at sunset a doe hit the small lane in front of us, then another and just as we had rehearsed, he jumped on the gun and stayed on it. I glassed the thicket as he stayed focused on the lane. I see tines to my right in the thicket, could tell it was a 8pt and as soon as I figure out it’s not him, he whispers that the doe and yearling just stepped out. As soon as I put the bino’s on them, the buck stuck his head out in the lane, then rushed out full speed at the doe. He didn’t even have to tell me he was on him as I could feel the stand start shaking. He panicked a little telling me he’s not broadside but the moment he took a step to the right he fired. The buck jumps and takes off, the vapor trail on a hammer bullet looks you fired a tomahawk missile, making me think the shot was low but he put it right where he needed to and he only made it 30-40 yards. He's the type that yells with excitement and hugs you the moment he shoots a doe, so there's no way to explain his reaction on bucks.
