    Default FYI on Pinkies

If you’re looking for ARS tomorrow or Saturday or bottom fishing in general, beware that the Red Porgy (AKA Pinky) is closed. There is no creel limit on them at this time. NOAA has closed the season from July 1, 2023 until April 24, 2024.

This wasn’t widely published but they’d still fine you.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Just curious, what percentage of game wardens can identify bottom fish? I've never been checked fishing.

I had one at the boat ramp that couldn't tell the difference between blue and greenwing teal so I have my doubts.

Some can, others pull up computers.

Had one argue with me that gags needed to be 22" and was calling my 21.5" scamp a gag......

In their defense, some cool crazy bottom dwellers out there!

Yeah, we caught some yellow mouth the other day along with a few yelloweye snapper, I was wondering if the DNR girl at GLM would be able to differentiate from the ARS and Scamp. Tomorrow should be interesting because you know they are going to be at marinas and landings checking.

Also, since the state limit on ARS is 2 and the federal is 1, what can you come to the dock with? How will they know if you caught them in federal or state waters. I could easily park over a nearshore for a bit to track on the GPS and claim we caught them there, have in the past just short fish. Is it worth the risk or will I have to fight it out in court? Are the DNR guys going to care?

    Dang - thanks for posting.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

What do you think a Georgetown County jury would do?
    I say keep 3.

I've asked that question. The best answer I have is the maximum creel limit is based on the last waters you fished in. So, if you were pulled over and checked at 3 miles and 1" and had more than 1 per person, then you would be over the limit. Ziplock fish.

When do we tell the bureaucrats they weren't elected and therefore can't make law so they can go piss up a rope? I guess the problem is the people fishing or hunting or doing whatever are too busy working to have time to fight the BS.

    You don’t tell em.
You just live your life the way you see fit.

If it costs you 150$ once in a while, request a jury trial.

I'm thinking that is the way it may go tomorrow. My guess is a record number of legal fish will be caught in state waters on Friday. Saturday looks like it will be dang close to an SCA here.

Tomorrow and Saturday aren't the days to be a rebel with the amount of checking that will be going on. A couple of skinned fillets laid flat in ziplocks in the bottom of the drink cooler blend right in every other day of the year though, especially when the front fishbox is full of other bottom fish.

Does anyone know what the ticket is if a red snapper was found hitching a ride home in federal waters on a normal day? Asking for a friend of course

Not 100% sure what it is now, but a few years ago when they closed it back down, a federal violation on red snapper for out of season, filleted at sea etc. started at $500 per fish for the first 20 fish. Beyond that got into confiscated boat, gear etc. territory.

On the Fish Rules app not showing the closure for Pinkies, toggle between state and federal waters. It’s closed in federal, but still shows open in state waters.
