A blind taste test with the bottles hidden would have all you poets washing egg off your faces.
And driving to Kentucky at $3/gallon for gas to save $10 on a bottle is just about the craziest thing I've ever read.

Mainly luck and the relationship you build with a store owner. Friend of mine I graduated with owns a few stores now and he looks out for me every now and then, but he's got a few big spenders that will come in once a month and spend $10k for their business meetings/trips/events, so they normally get the nod and that's fine with me. I'm with palmetto on just happening to stumble on some good bottles at retail. Walked into the ABC in Monroe the other week and they had Elmer T Lee on the shelf, one per person for $37.99.
As far as all the crazy prices some of the stuff is going for, I'd rather just walk in a store and get a bottle of 101, Early Times, or an Old Forester 100proof and spend less than $30. If I find something allocated even better, but I'm not going to go about stopping at every liquor store within a 100 mile radius.

So far, I have never sold a bottle. I have one now that I considered selling, for a minute. But, I just like drinking the rare stuff just to see if the fuss is legit. Working on a Rip now...it's worth the hype, IMO. But, I only paid $87 for it. Got a bottle of Lot B (12yr Pappy) for $141 and ,just last week, a bottle of EH Taylor Barrel Proof for $82. I'm not paying the crazy prices, so I don't mind drinking it.
I did give the Lot B to my son for his 21st birthday.
Crops are harvested, animals are killed.
you can buy a pappy bottle online and fill it with old forester.
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
Okay I don't post much but I do love a good bourbon. I'm a Buffalo Trace fan and don't have a problem finding it either. I also like forester and Old Grandad! LOL I just don't believe in paying the crazy prices some people will pay. Here in NE Ga we have Moonrise Distillery and they make a pretty good one.

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
I'd say the blind taste would get 99%.

A group of co workers traded 2oz sample bottles, blind, for a few months. Usually 2 sought after bourbons and 2 shelf bourbons. It was a great way to taste some allocated stuff blind without being influenced by the label. The bourbon poets pulled out after a few months when they kept ranking the Elijah Craigs and Evan Williams Single Barrels over their "favorites" like Blantons Gold. What I found humorous was the high proof guys kept complimenting the lower proof bottles as " so smooth."

As stated above the Four Roses small batch is good, Bib and Tucker is good and usually available, Clyde Mays is pretty good, and I love some Basil Hayden(get the Toast if they have it). 1792 is also a good choice. I was shocked to see a restaurant selling 1792 at $18 a drink, so I ordered a Woodford, and then went and picked a bottle up. I’m relatively new to this as well, and I don’t drink all the high end stuff, unless someone offers me a sample. I’d rather spend my money chasing critters halfway to hell and back. But it is nice to stand around a fire at hunt camp with a smooth bourbon.

now, if you're talking about the general public. yeah. I looked past the 99 percentage detail... If you're talking about someone decent who knows wine, the of course they could pick out flavors. I know I could, but my palate was trained for a couple of decades. I could break them down farther, and even these days I bet my nose could still pick out a scary percentage. I would have no worries picking out grapes.. but as of price, that's something else. You don't have to spend a ton to buy a decent bottle of wine. I drank stuff mostly out of the Rhone valley, and there's no justifying high end Bourdeaux, or California Cults.
So by this way of rationalizing that no one can tell the difference in high end wine and bourbons, it’s kinda like not paying $500 for a hooker when a$50 hooker does the same job ?
Put me in the camp that is willing to pay more for quality. Life is too short not to treat yourself to something special if you can .

Just Damn.
and I own all of the guns I need, except for like a DT11.. or one of those funky UGB25s. Plus enough golf stuff, new Stealth heads ordered, irons are new, and waaay too many putters. So, I'm cool for trading Pappy on things.
or I'll stock pile some Pappy up for a 150 to 200 Yamaha running 2 or 4 stroke.. older, I don't care, before I have to go out and buy another.
