SC man linked to Capitol riot, according to federal records
Investigators used geolocation in man's phone to place him at Capitol
WASHINGTON —
A federal criminal complaint shows a South Carolina man is accused of participating in the riot at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6.
Andrew Hatley is accused of entering a restricted building, engaging in disorderly conduct on the Capitol grounds and demonstrating in the Capitol building.
Investigators say Hatley drove to Washington, D.C., from his South Carolina home the day before the protests.
A witness gave investigators a picture Hatley had taken of himself and another man in front of the John C. Calhoun statue in the Capitol building, according to the federal record.
Investigators used geolocation data Hatley was sharing through an app on his phone to show he attended the protests, according to the complaint.
The complaint shows Hatley posted to Facebook after the protests saying:
“It has come to my attention that there was someone who looks like me at the Capitol. I’d like to set the record straight. I don’t have that kind of motivation for lost causes. I just don’t care enough anymore, certainly not enough for all that.”
But six days after the protest, investigators called Hatley.
"When HATLEY was asked about the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, HATLEY advised he was not sure how much he should say without legal counsel because he could be in a great deal of trouble," the complaint reads.
A phone number listed for Hatley was disconnected.
WYFF News 4 contacted the Newberry-based employer listed on Hatley's Facebook page, but the owner did not wish to comment on the situation.
