Staying at the Hampton on MLK JR blvd. My plan is to have a good anniversary with my wife without getting killed. The more I read on it it sounds like sketchy place at night.

Hour out of Savannah is The Hotel Smith, rates are comparable to a 5star New York hotel, walking distance to the Huddle de House and Le-McDonald's.

Your fine just be smart about walking around. Not sure your budget but there are some really good place to eat downtown. I really would go by whats been said already on here, well maybe lunch or something.
