It has been a tough season for me and my clan. Very little time to hunt, terrible weather conditions, baseball, and soccer has kept my boys from the woods and the deer at bay.
My oldest and I were able to slip off yesterday afternoon and I had a plan with the front and East wind. My oldest is almost 11 and very much into it. It is such a pleasure to hunt with him now, as we can sit in silence and enjoy everything about the hunt. He has killed 4 deer and his goal at the end of last season was to kill an 8 point.
A little after 5 I hear the unmistakable sound of a chase over our left shoulder and closing. Sure enough, 4 does in single file with an 8 point bringing up the rear. Jackson is on point, buck appears, Jackson says something about how big the buck is, clearly shaken. I ask if he wants to shoot him and he instantly says YES! Buck steps into the lane, I give him a Rick Flair, he stops dead in his tracks, looks up and Bang! Buck jumps straight up and I know he smoked him, double lung style! Heard him crash in the thicket a hundred or so yards away. That little TIKKA T3 chambered in .243 is an awesome ride, thanks Greg!
Once we both settled a bit we began the tracking job. He is now 5 for 5 and we are both extremely stoked! This was by far the most shaken I have seen him yet and now I know without a doubt he is hooked for life!
Thanks to jscrapmetal for helping us load and clean him! I got a good chuckle when Josh tells him the next one should be bigger and he says "or the same size!". That flooded my memories of the many marginal bucks I shot thinking they were absolute monsters!
I will let him bang away as long as it tickles his fancy! Buck tags or not....
Look back at his picture I am absolutely pleased and freaked out at how much of a mature young man beyond his years he has become. All season he talked to me about how he thinks he is old enough to hunt by himself. Although I know that time is near, deep down I am not ready to loose my stand buddy...
