In terms of go fast there is not a comparison between a 90 Yamaha and a 90 merc. If they are stock motors the merc will win every time

Cause mercs are fast and yamahas are reliable. Not sure about the 90s but with the 40hps its cubic inches.

Literally word for word what he said. Ask wetreed. He has owned the same hull with both motors.
I will say the 90 Yamaha is easier to mod and make faster overall but stock vs stock on the same hull a 90 merc is gonna smoke a 90 Yamaha.

And don't turn this into a ford vs Chevy pissing contest. I own 2 yamahas, a merc and even a mudbuddy.

I just wanted to know your reasons, considering the Yamaha has 2.0 gears and merc has a slower 2.33:1 ratio

Gears don't really mean much when you prop is the the equivalent of a final drive on a car so to speak. Obviously the merc will turn a taller prop

So in terms of your glitter boats, a 1.62 Mercury lower unit wouldn't have an advantage over a 2.0 gear? I'd disagree, a 2.0 ratio with its proper pitched prop will require more hp to turn than a 1.62 and its equivalent prop

Didn't realize we were talking about glitter boats. So why don't all glitter boats run 1.62s?
I have owned 1.62s and 1.75s have you?

Yeah and The 1.62 will be faster than the 1.75. Just like the 2.0 vs the 2.33. The physics still apply

So what were the numbers you saw with both 90s on the same hull?

I don't own one. Going fast in a Jon boat is for pheasants.

    Fordblue excluded

I have however owned a pad hull flats boat with 1.62s and 1.75s. It ran 72 with the 1.62s and 78 with the 1.75s.
There is a few more variables involved in your physics there turbo
