Anyone had trouble with their dog's anal sacs getting impacted? A few weeks ago noticed my Blue-tick wasn't holding his tail up, in pain, and trying to lick his rear end a lot. Took him to the vet and they emptied the sacs....all is better for now. Vet said about 1 in 100 dogs have this problem. Well today my Choc. lab has the same symptoms. Seems very ironic!? Going to take him in tomorrow.

Anyone's dogs had this problem? Is it related to their food?

HuntingCosta whats up with this?

JR- Anal gland issues are VERY common. They are most common in smaller breed dogs, but I've seen just about every breed have them. All dogs have anal glands, and they all get filled with fluid. The problem you're having might never happen again. Dogs with extreme problems can have to go as far as having them removed. But chances are you won't have the problem again. I have heard that anal gland issues can be related to allergies, just like ear and skin problems. And allergies can be related to food, or as simple as inhalant allergies like we have. Hope this helps.

Costa's right.

I have seen a bunch of dogs that have problems. My sister has a beagle and about once a month she starts dragging her ass against the carpet.
Which means time to empty/drain the anal gland. The vet has shown her how to do it herself, but she always let them do it. (I can't blame her).

Anyway, on most dogs they drain naturally when they poop.

My beagle used to have issues with her glands. When they drain those things, the smell will gag a maggot.

This is a fairly common problem. It is easy to express the glands yourself. But in my opinion it is worth getting a second job to be able to afford someone else to do it for you. It is by far one of the worst things you will ever smell.

I strongly agree! We had a cocker that had anal gland problems on a regular basis, about quarterly. Our vet showed us how to express them and my wife tried it one time!!! After that, the vet's technician did it, ain't enough money to make me try to put up with that smell & mess!

Many groomers will take care of that for you.

Happy for the dog, maybe

I found nothing pleasurable about watching my vet pop those things like zits and having what amounts to a big load of ass snot squirt all down the stainless table.

Does the dog's anal gland "leaking" mean there is a problem? My black lab/mix will leave a stinky liquid on the carpet and try to lick it up.

We have two small breed dogs and you can always tell when their "anals" need to be drained. Like stated, they will drag their ass on the floor, or try to lick their rear-end. my fiancé has had the vet show her how to drain them without insertion of a finger. You squeeze both sides on the outside around their anus and the most god awful, fishy smelling, brown goop will squirt out. I almost puked the first time I saw it.

This happens to my buddy's Brittany any time it gets stressed. He milks him and it is confirmed disgusting.

All of the above, plus, if your dog has soft stools they seem to have more problems with the glands not 'expressing'.

Peanut dermatitis.

Luckily, it's easily cured; put the peanut butter on your ass, not his.

When mine was younger his had to be emptied every couple of months. He grew out of it around two years old. Took him for his yearly shots and checkup earlier this month and one needed to be emptied. Just something you've been lucky not to have a problem with up to this point. From here on out just something else to watch out for. As other have said. Very common.

PM labhumper. He will pay you if you let him express the glands.

Ms. Maggie has already had hers "expressed" (THANKS Costa!)

the vet gave me samples of some "fiber treats" to begin giving her at 12-13 weeks to cut down on impaction.

she has her apt this week so we will so how her butt is.
