    Default Duramax down pipe

One on left is factory, one on right is aftermarket. As you can tell the one on left will restrict exhaust flow. The down pipe connects to turbo on one end then drops "down" and exhaust connects to other. By replacing this you will see a tad more power, lower exhaust temps ESP when towing, better performance and turbo efficiency.

MBRP pipe installed is around 400.00

If you're installing exhaust this would be the time to do both.

Tune them. Add a catch can. I haven't to answer your question. We can make yours the first. I always discount the first because I want the experience/knowledge.

Why would GM design it this way? i understand the emission stuff (don't agree but do understand), but this just seems dumb

The new pipe passes all federal emissions. GM designed it this way for clearance but there is not a clearance issue.
