    Default Looking for new rifle

I'm in the market for a new rifle. Im looking to use it for hunting and target shooting. Target shooting would be 600 yards and under. Also use it for shooting some deer (not over 200 yards). It would probably be used more for the target shooting than hunting but would still be commonly used in a treestand. I currently have looked at several rifles (Rem 700 Long Range, SPS, SPS varmint, Savage 10/110 Predator Hunter)but the Tikka T3 varmint has my eye right now. Any recommendations for a caliber and/or other rifles? Budget- $800 or less for rifle.

If you're thinking you're going to spend ~$800 on a rifle (and glass) to shoot 1k yards, you've bumped your head on something lately.

Should have clarified, targets out to 1000 but wouldnt be shooting that far. 600 is about the farthest I would be looking to shoot. And original post says $800 for rifle. Not $800 for rifle and scope.

Find $200.00 more for the rifle and you can buy my Winchester M70 Super Grade in 7mmRM.

$800.00 is low for punching targets with consistency at 1K for just the rifle. You'd need to increase your budget at least 4X to get in that game for any sort of consistency if you are including glass.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Savage in 6.5 and a swfa 10x42 will get you out to 600 easy. 1000 is a totally different animal.

    1. Why would you have "targets" at 1k and only shoot to 600yds?

    2. Your rifle budget should be $1000+ regardless. Your glass budget should be $2500.

It's your rifle. I don't care what you buy. Just don't plan to hit anything past your 600yd mark on an $800 budget with any consistency.

    You're welcome.

Get a 700, Savage model 10, or Howa 1500 and you will have a decent platform to build on. I personally think the Remington is a better choice. You sure as hell don't need $2500 worth of glass to go 1 K either. You can get into some good glass for half that.
I picked up a gently used 5R for $800 added a $1000 Bushnell DMR and shot it for a year, learning the ropes of LR shooting and competing. When I felt like it was holding me back I had it rebarreled to 6.5 Creedmore. It will shoot with anything out there. I beat the dogshit out of guys shooting rigs costing 3-4 times as much last weekend.

I beg to differ sir, and I can prove it; not just talk it..........

For the money you can't beat the Savage.

Got some budget glass that worked great for me for sale, I just wanted zero stop. I just went with cheaper glass to start with to see how much I'd use the long range toy. Find myself using more than I thought, so I went with something a little better. And yes, this scope can hit targets out to 1000 yards.

Mine is a Savage 10, I think I paid around $500. I will cut a ragged hole at 100, and consistently hit targets at 1000.

Damn dude!! That rig is badass!

A gentleman we know was at walnut grove three gun with an AP rhino in 6.5 creed(not shooting it, just came in) and it is probably the sickest production rife I have seen in a long time. He had the brochure that said it was a 1/2 MOA rifle and if it wasn't you could send it back, they would test it... Verify it again, and critique your shooting ability. Pretty impressive gun.
