Default Army Olympian busted for hunting deer

Army Olympian cited for hunting deer at car dealership

Sgt. 1st Class Dremiel Deshon Byers, left, competes in the
    120-kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the 2012
Summer Olympics in London. Byers was reportedly arrested
Thursday night for hunting deer out of season.

A sergeant first class who’d become one of the faces of the U.S. Olympic wrestling team over the past decade was cited by Colorado Springs, Colorado, police Thursday night for hunting deer out of season at an area car dealership.

Sgt. 1st Class Dremiel Byers, 39, was charged with several hunting-related violations, all misdemeanors, and released, The (Colorado Springs) Gazette reported. Witnesses saw Byers hunting a deer, 9news.com reported; officers later found a euthanized buck with an arrow in it.

Byers, a Greco-Roman wrestler, finished seventh in the 120-kilogram (264.5-pound) weight class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and ninth in the 2012 London games. He represented his sport during a video segment on NBC’s “Today” show at the 2012 games, during which Byers and a fellow Greco-Roman wrestler tossed around co-hosts Matt Lauer and Al Roker.

He’s listed as an assistant wrestling coach for the Army’s World Class Athlete Program, a Colorado Springs-based group where elite soldier-athletes train for Olympic competition while maintaining active-duty status.

Byers was one of three WCAP Olympic wrestlers in 2012 and the only Army wrestler on the 2008 U.S. team. He enlisted in 1994, according to multiple media reports, and was a runner-up at the 2004 U.S. team trials behind Rulon Gardner, who took bronze in Athens that year after earning gold in 2000.
