    Default UDS

Anyone ever built a ugly drum smoker ? UDS Did some research online and built one last week. Doing my first cook on it now. These smokers are great at holding a steady temp. Did a few test runs this past week and was amazed at how well and at how long they will hold a temp.
I'll post a pic of mine later.

Looks very interesting. May have to give that some investigation. Is that just an old gas grill base ?

Yeah, my parents bought a new gas grill so I used the base off of their old one.

How do it work???charcoal, gas, electric, wood coals??? I aint long from retiring the ol red R2D2, which is a shame cause she's just getting right after almost 7 years. what are the side stacks for, regulating heat? Anyhow, interesting piece of machinery.

Did some ribs on the UDS yesterday and they turned out great.

Fuel source is charcoal and wood chunks. The ball valves on the bottom control the intake and the elbows on top are the exhaust. These jewels are very efficient and cheap to build. I think the concept came from the weber smokey mountain smoker.

This link will tell you everything you ever would want to know or not want to know about a UDS.

I spent a couple hrs at work last night looking at different ways to build one of these. Already started assembling a parts list. Looks like the hardest thing to find will be a food grade barrel.

Did you make the firebox the same way as they did in the link you posted or did you go another route?

I made a 12"×12" basket out of expanded metal with a ash pan under it.

And for a barrel, check Craigslist. Bought mine from a guy in Anderson for $15. Some say you don't need a food grade barrel as long as you burn it out real good. Some food grade barrels have a liner in them that's a pain in the arse to get out.

OK thanks. I've got a weed burner/fire starter, so burning it out wouldn't be a problem. Just hesitant to buy a barrel and not know if/what chemicals might have been in it.

I got a food grade drum. It had pine apple concentrate in it. I burned it out real good and then scrubbed the inside with ajax.

I'm on the lookout now for a webber style lid to put on it.
