Sounds like it just needed cleaning. I called the guys from CPW out a couple of years ago on mine. They blew it out and gave me a little zinc hollow tube that was bent just right. Said the next time the logs or the pilot light kept going out to just blow the jet out manually with that tube. I've had to do that twice.
They told me dust causes it or dust ashes that the pilot light burns when it's on. They said it was a good idea to turn off the pilot light and lightly vacuum the whole works a couple of times a year. I thought about putting a glass screen on front but don't know for sure if that would help.
I haven't had a problem since I took all the carpet out and put in hardwood flooring. Carpets = tons of dust in a house.
If the sun is shining right you can see dust/fibers boil up everytime someone walks across a carpeted room. Don't matter how often you vacuum either.
